CSSD Units - The Backbone of a Safe, Infection-Free Hospital

Kapisa Healthcare designs, supplies, and installs Central Sterile Supply Departments for private hospitals, nursing homes, government hospitals, and day care centres across Delhi NCR and India. Every CSSD we deliver is engineered for NABH compliance, high-throughput sterilisation, and seamless workflow from decontamination to sterile storage.

Understanding the Facility

What Is a Central Sterile Supply Department?

A Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) is the dedicated facility within a hospital responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, packaging, sterilising, and distributing all surgical instruments, equipment, and consumables used across the hospital’s operating theatres, ICUs, and wards.
A well-designed CSSD is not just a room with an autoclave — it is a precisely zoned, workflow-driven facility where contaminated instruments enter on one side and sterile, ready-to-use trays exit on the other, with no crossover at any point. This physical separation between dirty and clean zones is what prevents hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) and keeps your patients safe.
NABH accreditation requires hospitals to have a functioning, properly designed CSSD. Kapisa Healthcare delivers CSSD units that meet these requirements — fully documented and ready for inspection.

The Zone System

How a Properly Zoned CSSD Works

Every CSSD Kapisa designs follows a strict unidirectional workflow — instruments always move from dirty to clean to sterile, never backwards. This is the foundation of infection control in a hospital.

Zone 01 — Dirty

Decontamination Zone

Where contaminated instruments arrive and are cleaned Used surgical instruments from OTs, ICUs, and wards arrive here. They are received, sorted, manually pre-cleaned, and passed through washer-disinfectors or ultrasonic cleaners. This zone operates under negative pressure to prevent airborne contamination from spreading. Staff here wear full PPE. No clean instruments enter this zone.

Zone 02 — Clean

Inspection, Assembly & Packaging Zone

Where cleaned instruments are checked, assembled, and packed Cleaned instruments move from Zone 1 via a pass-through washer or hatch into this area. Staff inspect each instrument for damage, assemble surgical trays per standardised pack lists, and wrap or pouch them for sterilisation. This zone operates under positive pressure to keep it clean. Packing materials and sterilisation pouches are stored here.

Zone 03 — Sterile

Sterile Storage & Dispatch Zone

Where sterilised packs are stored and dispatched to OTs and wards Sterilised packs exit the autoclave into this zone via a double-door pass-through. They are stored in closed, ventilated sterile storage racking and dispatched to OTs, ICUs, and wards through a dedicated clean corridor. Temperature, humidity, and access are strictly controlled here to maintain sterility.

FAQs

Common Questions About
Hospital CSSD Units

Yes. NABH accreditation standards require hospitals to have a properly designed and functioning CSSD. The layout must include physical zone separation between dirty and clean areas, validated sterilisation processes, and documented SOPs. Kapisa delivers CSSDs that meet all of these requirements.
A small CSSD for a 20–30-bed nursing home can be designed in as little as 300–400 sq ft. A CSSD for a 100–200-bed hospital typically requires 600–1,200 sq ft depending on OT volume and autoclave configuration. We design the most efficient layout for your available space.
A CSSD (Central Sterile Supply Department) serves the entire hospital — OTs, ICUs, wards, and outpatient areas. A TSSU (Theatre Sterile Supply Unit) is a smaller, OT-specific version located adjacent to the operating theatres. Kapisa designs and installs both, depending on your hospital’s scale and workflow.
Yes. Retrofit CSSD installations are one of our most common projects. Our engineers work within your existing space constraints to create a compliant zone layout. We coordinate with your hospital operations team to minimise disruption during installation.
The cost depends on the size of the CSSD, specification of finishes, equipment integration, and location. A small CSSD for a nursing home typically starts from ₹15–25 lakhs. A full-scale CSSD for a multi-specialty hospital can range from ₹40 lakhs to ₹1.2 crore. Contact us for a site-specific estimate.
Kapisa focuses on the design, civil works, fit-out, and infrastructure of the CSSD — including autoclave bay construction, service connections, and integration. We work with your preferred autoclave and washer-disinfector vendors, or can recommend trusted equipment suppliers if needed.
